Junior Handicap Final

Today saw two rising stars of golf compete to become the Drumoig Junior Handicap Champion. The match was played in great spirit over 18holes in some testing conditions.

Nicholas Evans and Vincent Clark entertained the watching spectators and caddies by demonstrating some excellent driving and short game skills. The match swung in both directions with Nicholas going 2up early on only to be pegged back by Vincent who then went into a commanding lead. However Nicholas showed great bounce back ability and fought well to bring the match back to all square. But Vincent was not to be denied. He regained the lead and held off the challenge to win the match on the 16th hole when he secured an impressive birdie which resulted in a 3&2 victory.

Drumoig Champions 2011

The Gents Scratch and Handicap champions were decided today in two entertaining matches over 36holes. Both games were played in good spirit with a high quality of golf on display.

After rain delayed play by approximately one hour it was eventually time for the finalists to tee off.

Ron Collie and Steven Swan battled for the scratch championship in a match that was close throughout. After the first 18holes Ron was 1up. The following 18 saw Steven fight back and the game hung in the balance for long periods with either player capable of winning the title. It came down to the 15th hole which Steven won after Ron had to concede the hole after losing a ball in the heavy rough. Following a half at the 16th, the 17th hole proved to be dramatic as Ron was just short of the par 5 green in 2 where as Steven was through the back of the green in the bunker. His ball was up against the back edge of the sand trap. Ron's third shot was close to the pin so this put pressure on Steven to get up and down to save a half. After a miraculous shot from the bunker both players halved the hole with birdies. It came down to the 18th hole where Steven showed composure and put his ball on the green whereas Ron came up short and was unable to chip in to save the match.
The standard of golf shown in the handicap final was extremely high with both competitors playing below their respective handicaps at certain times throughout the match. Sean Cowan and Pawel Gadomski put on a display to entertain the spectators with some fantastic golf shots. Like the scratch final, this was a very close game that swung in both directions. However it was Sean who managed to hold his nerve and come out victorious winning the match 2&1. It is worth mentioning that Sean is one of our junior members so congratulations to him for what is a massive achievement considering he also had to give Pawel 13shots per round. He has a bright future in the game.
